Importance of Retainers

Why Do I Have to Wear a Retainer?

At Arthur Orthodontics, we know that there's one moment in the course of orthodontic treatment that every patient chooses as their favorite - getting their braces off! We love to see the look on patients' faces when they see their brand new smile, and it brings us joy to watch their excitement as they realize that this change is permanent and their new smile will last the rest of their lives. But as we always remind them, they're not out of the woods just yet. Now begins the retention phase, one of the most critical parts of ensuring a healthy, beautiful, and long-lasting smile.

Making Your Smile Last a Lifetime

Once you get your braces off, you'll get the first taste of your new, beautiful smile. But while your teeth are in new positions, the underlying bone structure that supports them has yet to set into place - and without further intervention, your teeth will migrate back to their original positions, eliminating all of your hard work! That's where retainers come in.

Retainers are removable appliances that serve to protect your new smile, keeping your teeth in place long enough for your bones to set and for your smile to become permanent. It is important to wear these retainers each and every night to keep your smile perfect. It's also crucial to clean your retainers by brushing them any time you take them out and occasionally soaking them in a glass of water with a denture cleaning tablet. Don't worry, though - we'll give you detailed wear and care instructions once you receive them.
