We know that you worked hard to get your new smile and we want you to be able to keep it straight for a lifetime.

The Importance Of Retention & How Retainers Work

The retention phase begins as soon as your braces are removed. This stage of your treatment is the most important phase, as it solidifies the hard work you’ve put into straightening your smile. If used as prescribed, the retainer works to stabilize your teeth in their new places, ensuring that your smile stays as straight as it is the day your braces are removed. A retainer should be worn all day, and only be taken out if you are brushing or flossing your teeth and to eat.

Types of Retainers

At Arthur Orthodontics, we offer two types of retainers, and Dr. Arthur works hard to determine which type best fits your needs and lifestyle. The different types we offer include:

Essix Retainers

An Essix retainer is a clear plastic retainer that is smooth and fits over the entire arch of your teeth. Like Invisalign aligners, this type of retainer is removable, doesn’t require wires and is easy to clean.

Fixed Retainers

A fixed retainer is a bonded lingual retainer that is attached directly to the inside surface of your teeth. This retainer helps maintain better alignment of your upper and lower teeth. If you have a fixed retainer and the wire breaks, it is important to come into our Glendale or Scottsdale office to get it rebounded. It is also important to keep this area clean so as to avoid any oral problems such as gum disease.
