There are a number of exceedingly common alignment problems that can cause bad bites, or malocclusions, in patients. Malocclusions can impair the chewing, speaking, swallowing, and breathing functions of the teeth - but thankfully, most are easy to treat. Here's a list of some of the most common orthodontic problems we see:
Upper Front Teeth Protrusion: This is characterized by the upper front teeth extending too far out over the lower teeth, impacting speech, appearance, and bite function.
Overbite: This is when the upper teeth extend out over the lower teeth, and in extreme cases, it can cause the lower teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.
Cross-bite: This is characterized by the upper teeth sitting inside the lower teeth. If left untreated, cross-bite can negatively impact jaw growth and alignment.
Open-bite: An open-bite occurs when the upper and lower front teeth don't meet, impacting proper chewing, speaking, and sometimes causing unwanted habits like tongue thrusting.
Crowding: Crowding is very common, occurring when the teeth don't have enough room to erupt properly. We can usually correct this by developing the arches using braces. As a result, orthodontics can often prevent the need to have permanent teeth extracted.
Spacing: The opposite of crowding, this happens when there is excess room for the teeth or in the absence of certain permanent teeth. Often, this is primarily a cosmetic concern.
Mismatched Dental Midline: This problem occurs when the back teeth don’t fit properly together which can impair jaw and dental growth and function.
